How much should I tip? We all know it is customary to tip your server 20%, but what about in a quick service restaurant, or in a hotel with a bellhop? Learn about tipping etiquette and get your tip questions answered with Diversified in this video blog.

How to Determine Who Gets a Tip

Begin by determining if the individual in question is in the service industry or not. From there, evaluate if the individual has an advanced degree. Those with an advanced degree do not accept tips. Then, determine if you pay the individual directly, such as a plumber or landscaper. These businesses typically do not accept tips.

Service Industry Workers That Rely on Tips for Income

Individuals that work in the service industry, and have a portion of their income dependant on tips, should always be tipped. Servers, bartenders, and housekeepers all fall into this category. Delivery drivers and bellhops also are in this category.

How to Tip When You’re Not Sure

When you’re not sure how to tip, ask a supervisor what amount is typical or customary. They’re generally happy to let you know what their employees receive as tips. If it is a situation where there is no supervisor, ask the individual directly. It’s better to err on the side of asking, rather than to not leave one at all.
