I’ve Got Someone for You to Meet!
This is a very exciting blog for me as you are about to be introduced to someone most of you have never met. This person is very special, and I think you will tend to agree. You may think you know them or even met them before. Despite the fact you’ve spent most of your lives with this person, the funny thing is you have NO idea what they are like… yet.
Let me introduce you to the one and only, drumroll please, RETIREMENT YOU. I know what you are thinking, dude, did you introduce me to myself but in retirement? You bet your sweet behind I did. For those of you who are already retired, I’m sure you can totally relate to this sentiment. The reality is, you know working you or raising a family you for most of your life. Retirement will bring a whole new lease on life and truly is a life-changing event in your life.
The Same But Different
Here is where things get interesting, for most of us you have no clue what you’ll be like in retirement. Don’t believe me? Are you the parent you swore you’d be before you had kids? I sure as heck know I am not. I went into parenthood telling myself that each kid would play an instrument, do a team and individual sport, take a foreign language, and certainly, I wouldn’t let my kids be addicted to those phones I see other kids hooked on. Welp, if I am grading myself on my preparental guidelines I’d hate to admit that my score would be paltry at best! Kind of like AP statistics in high school!
Why do I mention all this, is it to make you feel bad or rather to scare you? Quite the opposite as my intent here is to A. make you aware of the fact that retirement brings a new you, and B. helps you prepare so you can maximize your golden retirement years.
- As someone who has had the pleasure of witnessing countless people retire, I can tell you that the working you are a person you won’t know when you retire. I’ve seen insane transformations with my retiree clients. They’ve lost a ton of weight, picked up hobbies they never knew they loved, started gardening, found a charity they were passionate about, and got wanderlust like you can’t imagine naming a few. Don’t be afraid of retirement, you are the point instead embrace the changes that are looming ahead, and I think being cognizant of the fact is half the battle. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spoken to someone about to retire, and they are legitimately perplexed as to what comes next.
- The main point of this blog is to help you prepare mentally and physically for the change that lies ahead. Awareness is ¾ the battle in my mind. So, what do I suggest besides telling you that you don’t even know retirement you yet? For starters, have discussions with your family or significant other about the changes retirement brings. These conversations are very helpful in beginning to frame the myriads of changes that await in the wings. Next, start engaging in some of these activities now. I call it retirement dating, go out and try some of these new activities or passions you think you’ll like. It will go a long way to not only preparing you for the next chapter but also helping you decipher what you will enjoy and won’t enjoy. For instance, I always thought I’d enjoy snowboarding, but then I tried and totally realized it stinks and is not for me. In a similar vein rather, you try something now then go make major retirement plans around something you think you’ll love doing and realize doesn’t fulfill you like you hoped. Finally, embrace the new you. Some people fear change, but I for one embrace it. I hate it when people say something like boy you’ve changed! Damn straight I did, it is called growth. The biggest sin to me is not changing as life is fluid and personal growth is all part of the equation.
How’d it go?
Tell me how did the big reveal to retirement you go? I know it is a lot to digest but trust me when I tell you understanding there is a new you waiting to be tagged in at retirement is a big benefit in maximizing those golden years.
As always stay wealthy, healthy, and happy!
